From Avestan 𐬯𐬥𐬁 (snā), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₂- (“to flow, swim”).[1] Compare Ancient Greek νῆσος (nêsos, “island”), whence English Polynesia and Indonesia, and Latin natare (“to swim”) (Spanish nadar and Italian nuotare).
