Etymology 2
مُعَاوِيَة بن صَالِح (Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ), chief judge of Córdoba, brought to his home city the pomegranate from Damascus and presented it to ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān I, following which the courtier سَفَر بن عبيد (Safar ibn ʿubayd) took a cutting and propagated the crop from it on his estate in the Province Rayya (كُورَة رَيّة (kūra(t) rayya), now Province of Málaga, but its capital then was Archidona), so that by the founder effect one had a new variety named after him.
