      وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ

      wa-ʾarsala ʿalayhim ṭayran ʾabābīla
      tarmīhim biḥijāratin min sijjīlin
      And He sent against them birds in flocks,
      striking them with stones of hard clay

      فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلٰكِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ قَتَلَهُمْ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلٰكِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ رَمَى وَلِيُبْلِيَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَاءً حَسَنًا إِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
      fa-lam taqtulūhum wa-lākinna llāha qatalahum wa-mā ramayta ʾiḏ ramayta wa-lākinna llāha ramā wa-li-yubliya l-muʾminīna minhu balāʾan ḥasanan ʾinna llāha samīʿun ʿalīmun
      And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
  4. to baselessly accuse, to defame

    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 4:112:
      وَمَن يَكْسِبْ خَطِيئَةً أَوْ إِثْمًا ثُمَّ يَرْمِ بِهِ بَرِيئًا فَقَدِ ٱحْتَمَلَ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُبِينًا
      wa-man yaksib ḵaṭīʾatan ʾaw ʾiṯman ṯumma yarmi bihi barīʾan fa-qadi ḥtamala buhtānan wa-ʾiṯman mubīnan
      But whoever earns an offense or a sin and then blames it on an innocent has taken upon himself a slander and manifest sin.

      وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاءَ فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَانِينَ جَلْدَةً وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا لَهُمْ شَهَادَةً أَبَدًا وَأُولٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَاسِقُونَ
      wa-llaḏīna yarmūna l-muḥṣanāti ṯumma lam yaʾtū bi-ʾarbaʿati šuhadāʾa fa-jlidūhum ṯamānīna jaldatan wa-lā taqbalū lahum šahādatan ʾabadan wa-ʾulāʾika humu l-fāsiqūna
      And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses: lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient.
