Etymology
A compound of ذو (“possessor of, owner of”) + ال (al, definite article) + قَعْدَة (qaʿda, “sitting place”), with the third element from ق ع د (q ʿ d, “to sit”), literally meaning "the possessor of the sitting place". Here, "sitting place" refers to making truces, since wars were forbidden in this month.
