Acronym of الدَّوْلَة الْإِسْلَامِيَّة فِي الْعِرَاق وَالشَّام (ad-dawla al-ʾislāmiyya fī l-ʿirāq wa-š-šām, literally “The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant”). It resembles the Arabic words دَاعِس (dāʿis, “that tramples”) or دَاحِس (dāḥis, “one who causes discord”).
