Etymology
From the verb تَنبَسیدَن (tanbasidan, “to twist threads”), from Proto-Indo-European *temp- (“to span, stretch, extend”) whence also Persian تافتن (tâftan, “to twist; to twine”), تابیدن (tâbidan, “to twist, turn, spin”).
Compare Arabic طِنْفَسَة (ṭinfasa), Ancient Greek τᾰ́πης (tápēs), Latin tapēte (see there for further descendants), Iranian borrowings.
