North Levantine Arabic

Etymology

Unknown. Descends from an Arabic أَثَارِي (ʾaṯārī) or perhaps أَثَارِيّ (ʾaṯāriyy), which may be derived from a form similar to Najdi Arabic and Hijazi Arabic إثري‎ (ʾiṯri) and in turn be of the root ء ث ر‎ (ʾ-ṯ-r) — compare Standard Arabic إِثْرَ‎ (ʾiṯra, “as a result of”) — but the semantic development remains a mystery overall.

Other cognates include South Levantine Arabic أتاري‎ (ʾatāri), Egyptian Arabic اتارى‎ (ʾatāri) and اتابى‎ (ʾatābi), Libyan Arabic تاريتا‎ (tārīta), Najdi Arabic and Hijazi Arabic أثِر‎ (ʾaṯir) and أثري‎ (ʾaṯri), Gulf Arabic أثاري‎ (ʾaṯāri) and أذاري‎ (ʾaḏāri), Iraqi Arabic ثاري‎ (ṯāri), and a form أفابي‎ (ʾafābi) found in North Africa.
