Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀅𑀧𑀳𑀁𑀚 (*apahaṃja), from Sanskrit *अपभञ्ज (apabhañja), from the prefix अप- (apa-) plus a word derived from the root भञ्ज् (bhañj, “to break”). The Sanskrit root भञ्ज् (bhañj) is derived ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreg-.
