From Proto-Turkic *öküŕ (“ox”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰈𐰛𐰈𐰕 (öküz, “ox”), Azerbaijani öküz (“ox”), Kazakh өгіз (ögız, “ox”), Turkmen öküz (“ox”), Chuvash вӑкӑр (văk̬ăr, “bull”) and Hungarian ökör (“ox”), a Turkic borrowing.
