Pronunciation

  • (file)

Noun

أَهْل (ʾahl) m sg or pl (plural أَهْلُونَ (ʾahlūna) or أَهَالٍ (ʾahālin), plural construct state أَهَالِي (ʾahālī))

    • (Can we date this quote?), al-Ṭabarī, جامع البيان في تأويل القرآن [The Compilation of Qur'anic Interpretations]:
عن ابن عباس، في قوله: ﴿لِيَسْتَأْذِنْكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ﴾ يقول: إذا خلا الرجل بأهله بعد صلاة العشاء، فلا يدخل عليه خادم ولا صبيّ إلا بإذن حتى يصلي الغداة، فإذا خلا بأهله عند صلاة الظهر فمثل ذلك.
[It was related] that Ibn Abbas said this regarding the verse "And those whom your right hand possesses must ask for your permission [to enter]": "If the man retires with his wife after the night prayer, no servant or young boy may enter till he finishes the prayer of dawn, and also when he is alone with his wife during the time of the noon prayer.
(Can we date this quote?), al-Qurṭubī, الجامع لأحكام القرآن [The Collection of the Ordainments of the Qur'an]:
قال مالك: (ومن بعد صلاة العشاء) فالله سماها صلاة العشاء فأحب النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أن تسمى بما سماها الله تعالى به ويعلمها الإنسان أهله وولده
Mālik said, "'And after the night prayer' [shows that] Allah called it 'the night prayer', and so the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, liked it to be called what Allah called it and [liked] the man to teach it [thus] to his wife and children.
(Can we date this quote?), Ibn Kaṯīr, تفسير القرآن العظيم [The Interpretation of the Great Qur'an]:
(وحين تضعون ثيابكم من الظهيرة) أي: في وقت القيلولة؛ لأن الإنسان قد يضع ثيابه في تلك الحال مع أهله، (ومن بعد صلاة العشاء) لأنه وقت النوم، فيؤمر الخدم والأطفال ألا يهجموا على أهل البيت في هذه الأحوال، لما يُخشى من أن يكون الرجل على أهله ونحو ذلك من الأعمال
"And when you put off your clothes from noon," that is, nap time, since the man could take off his clothes [when] with his wife, "and after the night prayer" because it is sleeping time, so [all] servants and children are ordered not to burst in on the people of the house at those times in case the man is with [literally "on"] his wife or something like that.
