أريج
Arabic
Alternative forms
- أَرِيجَة (ʾarīja), أَرَج (ʾaraj)
Etymology
Seemingly a back-formation from أَرْجُوَان (ʾarjuwān, “redbud”); however the presumable mutilation of the phytonym could have originated in colloquial Middle Persian, taking inspiration from the suffix -īg, Proto-Iranian *-ikah, from Proto-Indo-European *-kos; the suffix’s earlier state -īk can be seen in زَمْزَرِيق (zamzarīq, “redbud”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ʔa.riːd͡ʒ/
Noun
أَرِيج • (ʾarīj) m
