From the root ء ح د (ʾ-ḥ-d), related to the root و ح د (w-ḥ-d) of وَاحِد (wāḥid, “one”), from Proto-Semitic *ʾaḥad-. Cognate with Hebrew אֶחָד (ekhád, “one”).
