Perhaps related to אֵפֶר ('éfer, ʾḗp̄er, “ash”). Compare Aramaic עַפְרָא (ʿap̄rā, “dust”) (absolutive: עֲפָר (ʿăp̄ār)), Arabic غَبَرَة (ḡabara)/غُبَار (ḡubār, “dust”) and (perhaps borrowed from Aramaic) عَفَر (ʿafar, “dust”).
