From Aramaic; related to native Hebrew שָׂב (sav).

סָב • (sav) m (plural indefinite סָבִים, singular construct סַב־, plural construct סָבֵי־, feminine counterpart סָבָה)
- An elderly man; an aged or old man.
- A grandfather: the father of a parent.
- An old wise man.
Usage notes
- Though historically the primary sense was “old man” or “old wise man” (in which sense it was used also as an adjective), in modern use the primary sense is “grandfather”.
- This noun is a bit formal today; the more colloquial term for a grandfather is סבא (sába).
