1. taking

     ‏מַה מִקְדָּשׁ דָּבָר שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ נְטִילַת נְשָׁמָה אַף קֹדֶשׁ דָּבָר שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ נְטִילַת נְשָׁמָה וּבִנְגִיעָה נְטִילַת נְשָׁמָה לֵיכָּא:‎‎

     Ma mikdásh davár she-yesh bo n'tilát n'shamáh, af kódesh davár she-yesh bo n'tilát n'shamáh, u-vi-ngi'áh n'tilát n'shamáh léikha.

     Just as the Sanctuary is a matter that involves taking life, so too a consecrated thing is a matter that involves taking life, but physical contact does not involve taking life.

     ‏מֵאֵימָתַי מַזְכִּירִין עַל הַגְּשָׁמִים רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר מִשְּׁעַת נְטִילַת לוּלָב רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אוֹמֵר מִשְּׁעַת הַנָּחָתוֹ:‎‎

     Me-ematái mazkirín al ha-gshamím? Rábi Eli'ézer omér mi-sh'át n'tilát lulav. Rábi Yehoshúa' omér mi-sh'át hanaḥató.

     From when do we mention the rains? Rabbi Eliezer says, from the time of picking up the palm frond. Rabbi Yehoshua says, from the time it is put down.

3. removing
   • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Chullin 7:2:

     ‏הַנּוֹטֵל גִּיד הַנָּשֶׁה צָרִיךְ שֶׁיִּטֹּל אֶת כֻּלּוֹ. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר כְּדֵי לְקַיֵּם בּוֹ מִצְוַת נְטִילָה:‎‎

     Ha-notél gid ha-nashéh tsaríkh she-yitól et kuló. Rábi Yehudá omér k'déi l-kayém bo mitzvát n'tiláh.

     The one who removes the sciatic nerve must remove the entire thing. Rabbi Yehuda says, enough to fulfill the commandment of removing it.

4. (Judaism) the act of washing (in the context of נטילת ידיים‎, the washing of hands)
   • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Sukkah 27a:

     ‏פָּחוֹת מִכְּבֵיצָה נְטִילָה וּבְרָכָה לָא בָּעֵי הָא כְּבֵיצָה בָּעֵי נְטִילָה וּבְרָכָה:‎‎

     Paḥót mi-k-veitzáh n'tiláh u-vrakháh la ba'éi, ha k-veitzáh ba'éi n'tiláh u-vrakháh

     Less than an egg's worth does not require washing and blessing, but an egg's worth does require washing and blessing.
