A Mishnaic borrowing from Ancient Greek ζεῦγος (zeûgos, “pair”), in turn derived from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (“to join”). Analogous Semitic borrowings of the same term include Arabic زَوْج (zawj, “spouse”), زَوَّجَ (zawwaja, “to join”) and Aramaic זוֹגָא (zōḡā, “pair, spouse”), זַוֵּג (zawwēḡ, “to join”).
