Ultimately from Proto-Semitic *ʾil-. Cognate with the Arabic اللّٰه (allāh), Hebrew אֵל (ʾēl), אֱלוֹהַּ / אֱלֹהַּ (ʾĕlṓah), אֱלוֹהִים / אֱלֹהִים (ʾĕlōhīm).
