Etymology
A dialectal word unattested in Middle or Old Armenian. Closely related to the synonymous Turkish patul and Pontic Greek πατούλιν (patoúlin), further possibly also to Armenian թափուլ (tʿapʿul), Georgian თაფული (tapuli, “pile of mown hay”), Laz ტაფული (ťapuli, “ball of yarn; large bundle of hay”), Turkish tapul (“bundle or pile of hay or grain”), padul (“bundle of hay”), badul (“lump”). See each for more forms. The nature of the relationship and the ultimate origin are uncertain.
The Hamshen form թափուլ (tʿapʿul) is metathesized like թեպուր (tʿepur).
