Old Armenian
Etymology
An Iranian borrowing: compare Pashto ټانگو (ṭāngú, “wild pear tree”), ټانگه (ṭā́nga, “domestic pear tree”), Sanskrit टङ्क (ṭaṅka, “fruit of Feronia elephantum”), Punjabi ਤੰਗੀ (taṅgī, “the wild pear tree, Pyrus communis”), Kashmiri टंग् (ṭaṅg, “pear”), Kohistani Shina [script needed] (ṭāṅgū, “pear”), Khowar ٹونگ (ṭoṅg, “pear”) etc.[1][2] Compare also Classical Syriac ܬܰܢ̈ܓܳܝܳܬܳܐ f pl (tangāyāṯā) ܬܰܢ̈ܩܳܝܳܬܳܐ f pl (tanqāyāṯā, “Prunus mahaleb”),[3] apparently borrowed from the same source. Plums and pears can be denoted by the same name, as for example Arabic إِجَّاص (ʾijjāṣ), or Georgian ბერყენა (berq̇ena, “willow-leaved pear”) against Svan ბა̈რყუ̂ენ (bärq̇ûen, “cherry plum”).
Noun
տանձ • (tanj)
- pear (fruit)
