Etymology

The origin is uncertain.[1][2] Often derived from Proto-Indo-European *sperdʰ- (to run away or to compete in speed), either as an inheritance or a borrowing from the Hittite cognate [script needed] (iš-par-zi-zi /išpartzi/, to escape, to get away),[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] but the meaning of the Armenian word does not fit[13]. Note that the sense “to slip away, escape” is found only in modern Armenian.
