From a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word of the form *si/ekʰu-, also reflected in Ancient Greek σικύα (sikúa), σικύη (sikúē), σεκούα (sekoúa, “bottle-gourd, Lagenaria vulgaris; round gourd, Cucurbita maxima; gourd used as a calabash”); σίκυος (síkuos), σικυός (sikuós), σίκυς (síkus, “cucumber or melon, Cucumis sativus”); σεκουάνη (sekouánē, “a kind of olive”) and less likely in Proto-Slavic *tyky (Russian ты́ква (týkva, “pumpkin”)).
