The origin is unknown. Compare Arabic سَاحَ (sāḥa, “to tour, travel, roam; to flow, stream”).

- 5th century, Bible, Wisdom of Solomon 5.10:
- Եւ իբրեւ զնաւ սահեալ ՚ի ջուրց կուտակելոց. զորոյ իբրեւ անցանիցէ՝ ո՛չ գոյ զհետսն գտանել․ եւ ո՛չ զշաւիղս գնացից նորա ՚ի մէջ ալեաց։
- Ew ibrew znaw saheal ’i ǰurcʿ kutakelocʿ. zoroy ibrew ancʿanicʿē, óčʿ goy zhetsn gtanel; ew óčʿ zšawiłs gnacʿicʿ nora ’i mēǰ aleacʿ.
- And as a ship that passeth over the waves of the water, which when it is gone by, the trace thereof cannot be found, neither the pathway of the keel in the waves.
- Եւ իբրեւ զնաւ սահեալ ՚ի ջուրց կուտակելոց. զորոյ իբրեւ անցանիցէ՝ ո՛չ գոյ զհետսն գտանել․ եւ ո՛չ զշաւիղս գնացից նորա ՚ի մէջ ալեաց։
