Etymology

From Old High German bītan, from Proto-Germanic *bīdaną (to wait, await), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéydʰeti (to trust). Cognate with German beiten, English bide, Icelandic bíða, Danish bie, Gothic 𐌱𐌴𐌹𐌳𐌰𐌽 (beidan).
