单词 կլոր
释义

կլոր

Armenian

Alternative forms

  • կոլոր (kolor) Suceava

Etymology

A dialectal word which has also entered the literary language. The origin is uncertain. Recorded in Middle Armenian as կլուր (klur), կլոր-ակ (klor-ak), կլօր-ակ (klōr-ak).

Ačaṙean identifies with Old Armenian գլոր (glor, rolling). This is rejected by J̌ahukyan — because the dialectal forms point to Old Armenian *կլոր (*klor) with a կ- (k-) — who derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *gōl- (in case of կոլոր (kolor) from *gol-), from the root *gel- (to press into a ball, be pressed into a ball; round), + -որ (-or), whence e.g. Sanskrit गुल (gula, any small globular substance), ग्लौ (glau, round lump). See Pokorny for this root, without the Armenian. J̌ahukyan adduces also dialectal կլիկ (klik), կլոք (klokʿ), կղակ (kłak), կղան (kłan) as the reflexes of the same root.

Cabolov compares with Northern Kurdish gilor, gulor (round).
