From Proto-Indo-European *lig-, *leyg-. Cognate with Lithuanian liūgas (“puddle”), Latvian Ludza (“place name in Latvia”), Russian лужа (luža) and Albanian lëgatë (“puddle”). See also լիճ (lič).
