From Proto-Indo-European *seh₂d-, grown from *seh₂-, + -ոք (-okʿ). The closest cognates are Ancient Greek ἅδην (hádēn, “to one's fill, to satiety”) and ἁδρός (hadrós, “thick, strong, full-grown, ripe”).
