Probably of Proto-Indo-European origin and cognate with Sanskrit -अद्- (-ad-), Avestan -𐬆𐬜- (-əδ-), Ancient Greek -αδ- (-ad-). Compare Sanskrit दृषद् (dṛṣad, “rock”), Ancient Greek δειράς (deirás, “ridge of a chain of hills”), genitive δειράδος (deirádos).

From the root of հատանեմ (hatanem, “to cut”), with the loss of հ- (h-). Compare the pair փայտահատ (pʿaytahat) : փայտատ (pʿaytat).
