Etymology

Of Northwest Caucasian origin, from Kabardian [script needed] (Shashan).[1] The term was formerly thought to come into use after being associated with Chechen Aul, a mountainous area where the Chechens defeated a Russian army contingent in 1732, but use of the republic's name and its appearance on maps predate this.
