Etymology
From either a Turkic source, cf. Kazakh теңге (teñge), Bashkir тәңкә (täñkä) or Classical Mongolian ᠲᠡᠩ (teng); ultimately from Chinese 等 (MC tʌiX, təŋX, “equal; sort, type, etc.”), or specifically 戥 (“small steelyard for weighing money and similar items”), cf. Turkish denk.
