Inherited from Old Portuguese baço, of uncertain origin, possibly from a Vulgar Latin *hepatium, from Ancient Greek ἡπάτιον (hēpátion), from ἧπαρ (hêpar, “liver”). Alternatively from Latin badius. Compare Spanish bazo.
