From ніс (nis, “nose”) + -о- (-o-) + ріг (rih, “horn”), a calque of Ancient Greek ῥινόκερως (rhinókerōs). Cognates include Russian носоро́г (nosoróg), Belarusian насаро́г (nasaróh).
