Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from Ancient Greek πράσσω (prássō, “manage, do, perform”), with influence from Old Norse barátta (“contest”)[1][2]. Or, possibly via Vulgar Latin *būrattāre from Celtic; see Irish brath (“treachery”).[3]
