Inherited from Old East Slavic лѣнивꙑи (lěnivyj), from Proto-Slavic *lěnivъ (“lazy, sluggish”), from *lěniti + *-ivъ, from *lěniti, from *lěnь / *lěnjь (“laziness”) or *lěnъ (“lazy, slow”). Synchronically analyzable as лень (lenʹ) + -и́вый (-ívyj).
