Equivalent to Кърджали (Kǎrdžali) + -лия (-lija). Cognate with Turkish Kırcaallı or kırıcılu (“mill”) (see the etymology of Кърджали (Kǎrdžali)).

Borrowed from Balkan Turkish kırcal. Probably equivalent to кър (kǎr, “field”) + чалия (čalija, “shameless, immoral”) (literally "nomad, bum unbound by law"). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian крџалија, Romanian cîrjaliu/cârjaliu, Albanian kërxhalliu.
