- an alteration of a term related to грызть (gryztʹ, “to gnaw, to nibble”) – compare to грызу́н (gryzún, “rodent”);
- cognate with крот (krot, “mole”);
- from Proto-Slavic *krysъsa (“blood-sucker”).
