Иҙел
Bashkir
Etymology
Cognate withOld Uyghur [script needed] (Etil, “a river name, presumably the Volga”).Compare also with Turkish İdil; and Atil, the name of the capital of historical Khazaria, situated in the Volga delta.
Theophanes the Confessor in the 9th century mentions the river as Ancient Greek Ατελ (Atel). Thus, it is still debatable if the river name is Turkic or pre-Turkic by origin.
