掩（揜） [yǎn] 动

1. ■ （遮盖; 掩蔽） cover; hide:

掩着怀 cover one's breast with coat unbuttoned;

她双手掩面。 She covered her face in [with] her hands.

2. ■ （关; 合） shut; close:

虚掩着门 with the door left unlocked or unlatched;

掩卷 close a book

3. ■ [方] （被卡住） get squeezed [pinched] while shutting a door, lid, etc.:

手被门掩了一下。 I got my fingers caught in the door.

4. ■ （乘人不备进行袭击） attack by surprise; ambush and attack:

掩袭 launch a surprise attack;

掩杀 make a surprise attack; pounce on the enemy
