The origin is unknown. However, there are two highly questionable etymologies:
- From the nickname, from the verb Ukrainian відтина́ти (vidtynáty, “to cut off”).
- One of the forms Федо́т (Fedót) or Ведене́й (Vedenéj), with a suffix forming diminutive masculine nouns -ут- (-ut-).
