Etymology
From bak (“buck”) + -ot (accusative suffix) + lő (“to shoot”), literally “to shoot a buck”, a calque of German einen Bock schießen. Its origin in German is related to 16th century competitions organized in shooting associations where the lowest ranked shooter received a he-goat as a consolation prize.[1]
