掏

掏(搯) [tāo] 动

1. ■ （拿出; 取出） take out; fish out; draw out; pull out:

掏鸟蛋 take bird's eggs out of a nest;

掏出手帕 draw out a handkerchief;

掏炉灰 clear the ashes from a stove;

从口袋里掏出一枚硬币 fish out [up] a coin from one's pocket;

她从上衣里面掏出一张纸。 She pulled out a sheet of paper from inside her jacket.

2. ■ （挖） dig (a hole, etc.); hollow out; scoop out:

在沙中掏个洞 scoop out a hole in the sand;

掏空了一棵树 hollow out a tree;

掏脏水沟 clean out a sewer;

掏耳朵 pick the ears;

厨师把瓜掏空。 The cook hollowed out the melons.

他们在山坡上掏了一个深洞。 They dug a deep hole in the hillside.

3. ■ （偷） steal from sb.'s pocket:

他的钱包被掏了。 He had his purse stolen by a pickpocket.
