-ация
Russian
Etymology
From Latin -ātiō, an alternative form of -tiō.
Suffix
-а́ция • (-ácija) f
- -ation
Usage notes
- Frequently added to Latinate verbs ending in -и́ровать (-írovatʹ), -ова́ть (-ovátʹ) or -овать (-ovatʹ), where it replaces the entire suffix. It is often difficult to tell native Russian formations of this sort from those where a Latinate foreign noun ending in English -ation, French -ation, Italian -azione, etc. was borrowed directly.
