bairisch (strong nominative masculine singular bairischer, not comparable)

(historical) of the Bavarian tribe, especially before the creation of the Holy Roman Empire

Obsolete form of bayrisch (“of Bavaria in other contexts”).

The above distinction between bayrisch and bairisch is usually maintained in historic and linguistic scientific literature; otherwise only the ay-spelling is usual today.
In the north of Bavaria, Upper Franconian dialects are spoken. In the south-west of Bavaria, Swabian dialects are spoken. On the other hand, most dialects in Austria and South Tyrol are Bavarian.
