挡(擋、攩) [dǎng] 动

1. ■ （拦住; 抵挡） keep off; ward off; block; resist:

挡道 block the road; get in the way;

挡风 shelter sth. from [keep out] the wind;

挡雨 keep off the rain; shelter one from the rain;

筑一道篱笆挡狗 erect a fence to ward off dogs;

防护林带挡住了风沙。 The shelterbelt kept the sand in check.

喝一口挡挡夜里的寒气。 Have a drop. It'll ward off the cold of the night.

一条大河挡住了去路。 A big river blocks the way.

这么薄的棉衣在高山上挡不住寒风。 Such a thin padded coat cannot ward off the cold mountain wind.
