Etymology

Usually taken as a cross of ψάμμος (psámmos, sand) and ἄμαθος (ámathos, sand). Furnée adduces Proto-Germanic *samdaz (sand), so it could also directly continue a word from Proto-Indo-European *sámh₂dʰos (sand).
