From Proto-Indo-European *gʰrem- (“to resound, thunder, grumble, roar”), the same root of χρόμαδος (khrómados, “crash, fragor”), χρεμετίζω (khremetízō, “to whinny, neigh”), χρέμπτομαι (khrémptomai, “to clear one's throat”), Proto-Germanic *grimmaz (“grim, fierce”) and Proto-Slavic *gromъ (“thunder”).
