χάννη
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- χᾰ́ννᾰ (khánna), χᾰ́ννος (khánnos)
Etymology
In view of the characterization by Epicharmus as μεγαλοχάσμων (megalokhásmōn, “wide-gaping”), connection with χαίνω (khaínō, “to yawn, gape”) with expressive gemination has been proposed. Thompson considers a foreign derivation from Egyptian [script needed] (chnā, “unknown kind of fish”), while Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin comparing this word with χέννιον (khénnion, “kind of fish”), showing alternation α/ε.
