Etymology

From προ- (pro-, “forwards”) +‎ ὁράω (horáō, “to see”) +‎ -ος (-os, second declension ending). οο (oo) changed to ου (ou) by crasis and the π (p) changed to φ (ph) by influence of the ῾ (h) sound.
