φορίνη
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- πυρίνη (purínē)
Etymology
Without cognates neither in Greek nor in other languages. A remote similarity is shown by Old Norse bǫrkr (“bark of a tree”) and German Borke (“bark”). Yet, the variant πυρίνη (purínē) shows that the word is Pre-Greek.
