Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Hellenic *pā́uros, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w-, the irregular φ- (ph-) representing an expressive *pʰ-, as in Old Armenian փոքր (pʿokʿr, small).[1][2] Beekes proposes a Pre-Greek origin.[3]
