Etymology

The word has been compared with Latin fricō (“I rub, chafe”), Lithuanian brūkis (“stroke, line”) and braūkti (“to strike, rub”), but this is formally hardly possible. Possibly from Pre-Greek. The connection with φορκόν (phorkón, “grey; wrinkled”) is quite uncertain.
